AF International’s Best Kept Secret

AF International’s Brand Director Paul Hardy today talks exclusively to Andy Braithwaite of OPI about what can only be classed as AF’s best kept secret, their commitment to sustainability and the environment. The Podcast, live here, reveals AF’s green journey and the changes that have been quietly made within both the product range and the business.

Paul reveals some little-known facts about AF International including its zero waste to landfill status and ISO 14001 accreditation. As Paul explains, “Many companies talk about their actions, but few go through the lengthy process of change and accreditation. Here at AF, we decided many years ago that we must take ownership of our role within the industry and assess the products that we are producing. For instance, all of our tubs and pump sprays are made with the second most eco-friendly plastic HDPE2, and this can be recycled up to 10 times.”   

AF also utilises an exceptionally high degree of crepe-paper wipes within its tub products, all of which are supplied within boxes from an FSC chain of custody accredited company. Progressing one step further, the company are suggesting that customers reuse, recycle and refill. New tub refills have recently been launched to great success and some of the most popular pump spray products have bulk refills available. Paul adds, “We have a strong social media campaign encouraging consumers to reuse, recycle and refill, but to us as a company, this is more than just a campaign, it is a mantra. Recycling bins are used at our site, energy saving LED lights have been installed throughout our premises in Ashby de la Zouch and we have launched a raft of initiatives including litter picking, installation of wildlife habitats and bee/butterfly friendly plants.” 

AF have also worked closely for many years with the National Forest, contributing funds to plant saplings for up to 3.8 hectares of land. In terms of strategic partnerships, AF is in the early stages of talks with global business Terracycle and hopes to aid sponsorship to collection points for waste that is the most difficult to recycle. AF’s parent company Element Solutions Inc. are also holders of the silver EcoVadis accreditation.
